How to Calibrate a Thermocouple: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Inspect the thermocouple and set up the reference junction. Examine the sheath, junction, and extension wire for damage, oxidation, or incorrect polarity, verify the wire type matches the connector, and establish a stable ice-point or electronic reference junction.
Step 2: Perform “as found” verification. Record the measured EMF or converted temperature at each set point before any action. As-found data proves whether the process temperatures controlled by this sensor were actually where the record says they were.
Step 3: Compare against the reference at each set point. Insert the thermocouple and reference standard to the same immersion depth, allow full stabilization at each set point, and record EMF against the reference temperature — stem conduction and inadequate immersion are the dominant error sources.
Step 4: Report deviations, or repair and reject as required. Thermocouples are generally not adjustable; deviations are reported as a correction table or curve.
