How to Calibrate a Scale & Balance: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Level, inspect, and allow the instrument to stabilize. Confirm the pan or platform is clean and level, check the load cell and suspension for damage, and let the instrument and reference masses acclimate with power applied for the manufacturer-specified warm-up period.
Step 2: Perform “as found” verification. Record indications at each test load across the full capacity before any adjustment or span correction. As-found data proves whether material weighed before service actually met specification.
Step 3: Verify accuracy, repeatability, eccentricity, and linearity. Apply reference masses at multiple points through the range in increasing and decreasing sequence, repeat a mid-range load to establish repeatability, and load each quadrant of the platform to quantify corner-load error.
Step 4: Adjust, repair, or reject as required. Perform span and linearity adjustment where the design allows, correct levelling and load-cell mounting issues, and service the instrument as needed. Units outside specification after service are documented and returned as limited-use or rejected.
Step 5: Perform “as left” verification and issue documentation. Re-run the full load set after any adjustment and issue an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited certificate with as-found and as-left data, measurement uncertainties, and NIST traceability.
