How to Calibrate a Pressure Gauge: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Inspect the gauge and connect it to the standard. Check the case, window, pointer, and process connection for damage or contamination, confirm the gauge is mounted in its normal operating orientation, and let the gauge and reference standard stabilize at 23 °C ± 5 °C.

Step 2: Perform “as found” verification. Record indications at each test point across the full span before any adjustment. As-found data proves whether process pressures logged before service were actually within tolerance.

Step 3: Verify accuracy, hysteresis, and repeatability. Apply reference pressure at multiple points in both rising and falling sequence to quantify hysteresis, repeat the cycle to establish repeatability, and confirm the pointer returns to zero after the span is released.

Step 4: Adjust, repair, or reject as required. Correct zero and span, re-set the pointer, and service the Bourdon tube or movement where the design allows. Gauges outside their accuracy class after service are documented and returned as limited-use or rejected.

Step 5: Perform “as left” verification and issue documentation. Re-run the full point set after any adjustment and issue an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited certificate with as-found and as-left data, measurement uncertainties, and NIST traceability.
