How to Calibrate a LISN: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Inspect the network and set up the reference plane. Check the EUT and mains terminals, RF measurement port, and chassis bonding for damage or corrosion, confirm the correct fuses and limiter accessories, and establish a low-inductance ground reference plane for the measurement.
Step 2: Perform “as found” verification. Sweep impedance and voltage-division factor across the full frequency range before any service. As-found data proves whether previous conducted-emissions scans were taken against a compliant impedance.
Step 3: Measure impedance, voltage-division factor, and isolation. Sweep the impedance seen at the EUT terminals across the specified range and compare against the CISPR tolerance mask, measure the voltage-division factor from the EUT terminal to the RF port, and verify isolation between the EUT and mains sides.
Step 4: Repair or reject as required. Replace failed inductors, capacitors, connectors, or switch contacts and re-bond the chassis where required. Networks whose impedance remains outside the tolerance mask are documented and returned as limited-use or rejected.
Step 5: Perform “as left” verification and issue documentation. Re-sweep the full frequency range after any service and issue an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited certificate with as-found and as-left impedance and voltage-division-factor data, measurement uncertainties, and NIST traceability.
