How to Calibrate a Dial Indicator: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Inspect the indicator and allow it to acclimate. Check the contact point, stem, bezel, and spindle for wear or damage, verify smooth travel through the full range, and let the indicator and reference standards soak at 20 °C ± 2 °C before testing.
Step 2: Perform “as found” verification. Record readings at the specified test points across the full range before any adjustment. As-found data proves whether previously accepted parts were measured with an in-tolerance indicator.
Step 3: Verify accuracy, repeatability, hysteresis, and retrace. Compare indicated values against gauge blocks or the calibration tester in both increasing and decreasing directions, then repeat at a single point to establish repeatability and quantify hysteresis and retrace error.
