How to Calibrate a Data Logger: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Inspect the logger, check the battery and clock, then stabilize. Verify input terminals, connectors, and probe leads, confirm the real-time clock and logging interval are correct, check battery or memory-backup health, and let the unit acclimate at 23 °C ± 5 °C.

Step 2: Perform “as found” verification. Apply reference values to every channel and record both the live display and the downloaded log before any adjustment. As-found data proves whether the historical record the logger produced was actually traceable.

Step 3: Verify each channel across its range. Source reference values at multiple points on every channel and parameter, confirm channel-to-channel isolation and cold-junction compensation on thermocouple inputs, and compare the stored log against the applied values rather than the display alone.

Step 4: Adjust, repair, or reject as required. Apply the manufacturer’s channel corrections where the design allows, replace failed sensors or worn terminals, and service the unit as needed. Loggers outside specification after service are documented and returned as limited-use or rejected.

Step 5: Perform “as left” verification and issue documentation. Re-run the full channel set after any adjustment, confirm the downloaded record matches, and issue an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited certificate with as-found and as-left data, measurement uncertainties, and NIST traceability.
