Serving Rocket Center, WV
Rocket Center is not a conventional town. It is the site of Allegany Ballistics Laboratory, a 1,628-acre Navy-owned industrial and research complex in Mineral County that employs roughly 1,000 people and has no permanent residents of its own. Established in 1944 on a former Army ammunition site, ABL is owned by Naval Sea Systems Command, operated under contract by Northrop Grumman, and belongs to the Federal Laboratory Consortium. Work on the site runs from solid-rocket propulsion — the plant built Altair upper stages for the Vanguard program — to advanced composite structures for the F-22 Raptor produced on automated fiber-placement machines, alongside roughly 80 military product lines that include 30 mm ammunition, fuzes and proximity sensors, mortars, warheads, and training ordnance. The Robert C. Byrd Hilltop Office Complex and the Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing share the property and host tenant research and secure computing work. Geographically the site sits on the North Branch Potomac River at the western terminus of West Virginia Route 956, which crosses into Maryland just south of Cumberland; U.S. Route 220, U.S. Route 50, and Interstate 68 at Cumberland carry traffic in and out, and Keyser — the Mineral County seat and home of WVU Potomac State College — lies about fifteen miles up the river. Tra-Cal provides ANAB-accredited ISO/IEC 17025:2017 calibration of test, measurement, and laboratory equipment to organizations working in this environment.
Our laboratory is physically located at 8577 Atlas Drive in Gaithersburg, Maryland; we do not operate an office at Rocket Center. Because the Potomac Highlands sit outside our Mid-Atlantic pickup and delivery radius, we serve Rocket Center and the surrounding Cumberland area through two intake paths: prepaid ship-in calibration with a typical five-business-day turnaround, and scheduled onsite calibration appointments at your facility using our mobile laboratories, which carry more than 100 instruments per van — useful on a site where much of the instrumentation supports test stands, energetics handling, and composite fabrication and cannot easily leave a controlled area. Each calibration is performed against documented procedures, traced through NIST, and accompanied by an audit-ready certificate that supports AS9100, ISO 13485, ISO 9001, and FDA 21 CFR Part 820 quality systems.

How Tra-Cal Serves Rocket Center, WV
In-Lab Calibration:
Send your equipment to our ANAB-accredited ISO/IEC 17025:2017 laboratory with prepaid inbound and return shipping. Calibration is performed in a climate-controlled environment against documented procedures, with traceability through NIST. Standard turnaround is approximately five business days from receipt, and asset records are retained with automated due-date notifications.
Onsite Calibration:
Our metrologists travel to Rocket Center-area facilities for fixed assets, large inventories, and instruments that should not be moved. Calibration is performed in a controlled environment at your site on a scheduled appointment, with the same accreditation, NIST traceability, and documentation as in-lab service.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes. Tra-Cal supports Rocket Center and Mineral County through two intake paths: prepaid ship-in service with a typical five-business-day turnaround, and scheduled onsite calibration appointments at your facility using our mobile laboratories. The Potomac Highlands sit outside our Mid-Atlantic pickup and delivery radius, so those are the two paths available — but the same ISO/IEC 17025:2017 ANAB accreditation, NIST traceability, documented procedures, and certificate format apply either way.
-
Yes. Tra-Cal maintains ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation. ANSI/NCSL Z540-1 and Z540.3 conformance is also available. The current scope of accreditation is published on the Tra-Cal Certificate of Accreditation page.
-
Standard turnaround for in-lab calibration is approximately five business days from receipt of the instrument. Expedited turnaround is available on request and depends on instrument type, parameter scope, and current lab volume.
-
Yes. Each calibration certificate documents traceability through NIST, includes as-found and as-left data where applicable, lists the standards used, the calibration procedure reference, environmental conditions, and the technician. Certificates are designed to support AS9100, ISO 13485, ISO 9001, and FDA 21 CFR Part 820 quality system audits.
-
Tra-Cal supports defense and aerospace manufacturing, solid-rocket propulsion and energetics work, advanced composites and automated fiber placement, ordnance and fuze production, federal and contractor research laboratories, secure computing and data operations, and the regional healthcare, utility, rail, and college teaching labs of the Cumberland area. Typical work includes RF and microwave standards, multimeters and calibrators, pressure, force and torque instruments, temperature and humidity sensors, oven and chamber mapping, dimensional gauges, and timing and frequency references.
-
Yes. Our mobile laboratories travel to Rocket Center and the wider Cumberland area on a scheduled appointment, which suits fixed assets, large instrument inventories, test-stand and production-floor equipment, and anything that cannot leave a controlled or access-restricted area. Each van carries more than 100 reference instruments, and the calibration is performed in a controlled environment at your facility with the same ANAB-accredited ISO/IEC 17025:2017 scope, NIST traceability, and documentation as in-lab work.
